"I had 5 or 6 songs which I had written with a mind to record with a full band. When I came to record, I put the 'outlines' down acoustically first, and realised that I could easily lose the initial impact of the tracks by adding electric instruments. I decided at that point to let the tracks sit on their own and added only a background 5 string banjo and harmonica, supplemnting the initial guitar work with some sparse slide guitar. It seemed to work and so I left it as it was, and mastered it at another studio (I think you should always take your work away and play it in another studio to see how it sounds). I added 3 cover tunes (by popular demand) and Outlines became my first completely acoustic recording." SP |

The Kiss (2001) The Kiss Running Away Solitary Bird "The Kiss is a 3 track CD and another acoustic based recording, thistime featuring my first attempt with a string banjo and fiddle. The Title track was originally going to be a short story and I later set it to music. "Solitary Bird" was a favourite song of my dear friend and ex-partner/companion Angie Masterson, who cruelly died of cancer in her prime...a great vocal talent never fully recognised"

It still gets a lot of airplay on independent country stations in Europe, and strangely enough, New Zealand!"

Candy Run (1989) Steve Payne & The Candy Run Welcome 8 the Quadrant Caught in the Act Friends Young Girl/Older Man So low (solo) Van Nuys Out to Lunch In my time of Dying "Candy Run was recorded in '89 during a return trip to the UK...all the songs are self penned originals, most written during my stay in L.A. the previous year. Track one, Welcome To The Wonderful World of AIDs was penned after I read a piece in the L.A. daily news about a business man who went to Vegas on a business trip and got a little 'juiced', hired a 'hooker' and woke up in the morning in a seedy motel - wallet and jewelry gone - and read the aforementioned message written on the mirror in red lipstick...ooops!
